The First Pieces of 2011 - Artrage Paintings

Before I start work on some Insect Concept designs for a computer game client, I wanted my first pieces of 2011 to be for me, more personal. So, I fired up my new Mac, loaded up Artrage and went at it! These are what I have come up with:

This EP design is for my band Brinksmen www.brinksmen.co.uk. Created in Artrage and Photoshop, this piece was the first image to be created this year. I wanted to try to make it look rough, inky and a bit sketchy even though software packages have trouble replicating such a look.

The second piece of the year, titled Yin Shrub, Yan Tree, created only in Artrage this time. I did this whilst listening to a pod cast for illustrators called Escape from Illustrator Island that I intend on listening to more often.

This time, every year, the big companies bombard us normal folk with adverts and offers so that we may buy their wares and give them away as a present for Christmas (or Hanukkah). I think that the act of giving presents is an interesting one and can make you feel really good for giving a great gift that is well received. With the release of the Amazon Kindle (and massive ebook library), printed books may have their days sadly numbered. A lot of trees simultaneously breathe a sigh of relief at that thought.

But, I do think that books will become more popular as they may become more of a novelty item. I imagine myself much older in the future, flying cars whizz by, clothes are shiny and plastic, dogs are being walked by floating dog walkers and it is at a time when 3D cinema is the norm. Something of a mix between Back to the Future 2, Blade Runner and the Jetsons.

I see myself, walking down a metal pavemented street with a few of my grandchildren and happen to come by a strange little shop. Peering inside, it seems that this strange emporium of eclectic wonders happens to be selling these weird things that my grandchildren don't know of.

"What are those stranges things Grandpa?" One of them says, his holgraphic hat flickering in the dull, much more distant sun light.
"Ah, I remember them when I was younger...you know, before the Mole people became our overlords back in 2018. They are books."
"B-B-Books?" Another says, not fully understanding the word.
"Yes, books. I had made some of my own don't you know, when I gave up a career in Pro Wrestling to become and artist."
"Not that story again Grandpa..." the children all complain in unision.

Or something to that effect.

Showing Some Love to Leroy

They say plagiarism is the best form of flattery. Well I am open in saying that the character below isn't mine and belongs to a "Mr Mathew Dunn" so therefore, I am paying homage to him as apposed to stealing his work. Man I love the cold stare of a gas mask!

Below is a stage by stage of how I created my take on the character "Leroy" that I painted using acrylic paints.

Stage 1:

First, I sketched then inked in the line work with a water resistant ink pen. I then put thin washes of acrylic paint over the top and encouraged the paint to run with extra water.

Stage 2:

After leaving some parts to dry, I dabbed unwanted wet paint away using a cloth and began to lay on thicker layers of paint and also started to build up the colour in blocks.

Stage 3:

I went on to darken the background and add even more thicker paint to the piece. This is where I started to work on shadows too.

Stage 4:

I finished of the piece by darkening shadows and added on highlights over the top of the paint.

Just thought that I'd share some of my recent pieces that I have been working on. All are pretty much tester pieces for larger paintings I am planning. Hope you enjoy.

This ink drawing of a worm had a bit of an acrylic was over the top. With this piece I was experimenting with a washy style instead of going for the really tight line work.

This is for a future project where I will depict a series of different robots.

This small test piece was created to see the visual impact of whether I could create an image that could exist either way up.

Starting to work on my large Omens project by creating little test pieces now and this is the 4th test piece but the first mocked up in paint. Imagine 300 of these eyes across 3 large streched canvas' and you will be imagining the Wall of Eyes.

So, today I created a piece called 100 Portraits, to mark no special day or event in particular, but because I wanted to share with the world 100 pieces of work in one go. It took nearly 5 hours to compile and arrange but to think of the hours spent creating the pieces!

Along the way, I did take a few snap shots of my screen as a sort of log. I only wish I had recorded the times of each one...

In Progress 1:

Just opened up the 100 pieces that made the cut. By this time, my laptop was begining to show some real signs of distress as the total size of all them files was somewhere in the regions of 2 gigs of space.

In Progress 2:

About half way through here (I think) and I was shrinking each picture to the same height size (which was 1000 pixels). After each one, I'd drop it into the main file and try to organise them by general colour. Each image went on to it's own layer and was named and sorted alphabetically for ease of use.

In Progress 3:

All files resized and sitting in one heck of a mess now... must start sorting.

Done:

The piece is complete and at a PSD size of 450mb. Not bad really.

These three new t-shirt designs will be the first of many weird cross breeds and strange beasties. Not sure how many I will be doing but they come from the mind of Doctor Richter Rosenblack (me) and his arch nemesis Professor Vincent Merkin (Chris). Its sort of a new project we're working on together. What we do is come up with a challenge and then we draw it. The challenges are often a mix of 2 or 3 creatures and so far, we're 3 designs in.

Interview with the awesome Wayne Barlowe

So today, I have posted a new interview for my Inside the Artist's Studio blog. The artist is a Mr Wayne Barlowe, something of a legend in the scifi and dark art scene. I was thrilled to ask him some questions about his book "God's Demon" and the possible sequeal.

Now usually I post up notifications about new interviews on art forums but this time I haven't and won't as the last time I did it, I was warned by a moderator that what I was doing was spamming the forum and User Leeching. Now, my intentions were never to do those things as the purpose was always to create some quality, new content online and share it for free.

I feel sad because now I feel that future artists will miss out on the free publicity because a massive forum, who regularly without fail gets traffic and has paid membership options (so must make a tone of money from that alone), is scared that a few interested users will read my articles.

Very very sad.

Either way, I will post interviews regardless but I'll have to find other ways to promote the content. The interview can be read here.

Holy Brain Fazzle Batman!

Oh my god, oh my god my head! This past week has been spent predominantly researching the living hell out of Gotham City, its villains, heroes and many, many origin stories. I have read so many wiki pages and poured over numerous pictures and as such, my self initiated project "Gotham's Rouge Gallery" has had some changes made to it. For instance in my last post I listed a 16 painting long project. Now, I have split it into two, having the avengers on 1 side (10 paintings) and the undesirables on the other (25 paintings).

Having done so much research, I came to really like a lot of what Gotham had to offer and felt that the project should rapidly expand to accommodate the scale of the Batman Mythos. I'll probably keep my final lists a bit of a secret as when I have completed this mammoth project, I will probably hold off from releasing the images until I know what I want to do with them.

In one way I want to keep things a bit HUSH... HUSH... but in another way I want everyone to know what I'm up to.

I've just got to get a move on a finish this thang!

Batman... Batman you say?

Well, I'm back from Cyprus and am several shades darker. It would also seem that my girlfriend Claire was right, I did need a holiday. Sitting by a pool with the blazing sun on my skin with a sketch book in hand, served to be the perfect conditions to fuel my creative spark. I produced 8 line drawings on that holiday. EIGHT!

Added to the 2 line drawings I did before hand and the one I've done today, thats now 11 paintings on the go. This is the most I've had running at any one time and I don't feel daunted by it.

Over the next couple of weeks, I will be preparing for my October gallery joint showing with my mum, so I won't be posting too many blogs until time permits but I will tell you this... I am working on two projects. One is pretty big and I'm not going to reveal too much about it yet but the other is what was started in Cyprus.

This project is titled Gotham's Rouge Gallery and will comprise of 12 paintings (possibly 16). As you will see, the theme is Batman villians and they will depict:

1. The Joker
2. Harvey Two Face
3. Poison Ivy
4. The Penguin
5. The Riddler
6. Scarecrow
7. Harley Quinn
8. Bane
9. Catwoman
10. Mr Freeze
11. Ra's Al Ghul
12. The Mad Hatter (possibly)
13. The Ventriloquist (possibly)
14. Clayface (possibly)
15. Killer Croc (possibly)
16. Batman... the dastardly vigilante himself.

Numbers 1 to 7 have already been done and more will be on the go soon. But you should know, I am putting my own take on the characters... which is risky (don't wanna be upsetting the comic book fans).

5 Tips to becoming a better artist
Part 2

So, here is the second half of tips that I have picked up along the way and feel that every artist should use in their artistic endeavors.

Tip 6: Play With Perspective

Now, by this I don't mean completely bend the fabric of reality or attempt to mimic the works of M C Esher (but looking at his work couldn't hurt). No! What I mean is take the time to learn about vanishing points, 2 point and 3 point perspectives and how to create objects in three dimensions correctly. As this is just a tip, I'm not going to go into the details here but there are numerous books and places on the web that cover this important area. Learning the rules of perception will open up the possibilities of what you can draw and will broaden your artistic horizons greatly.

Tip 7: Hunt Down Your Artistic Weaknesses & Destroy Them!

I was told this by an incredibly exceptional artist called Chet Zar. This tip is something you should approach regularly and be really tough and honest with your self. By knowing what your not good at artistically and making a conscious effort to attack it (them, could be lots of things), will enable you to systematically grow. For instance, if you draw a lot of humans but avoid drawing feet because you know your not that good at it, set aside time to draw lots of feet, over and over again until they look right (just be sure not to get a foot fetish). This links to a previous tip I did of Draw, Draw and Draw Some More! Drawing things that you don't draw often or at all will increase your repertoire and will enable you to paint and illustrate more complex pictures.

Tip 8: Ask For Help & Critiques

I heard this one from numerous sources and I have to say that this is something you don't have to do all the time. Joining online art communities and forums will give you access to professionals who do know their stuff and can really help you improve, but having thick skin is advised. At one point or another, you will get some harsh and unfair comments but that is the risk of being an artist who puts art out for viewer consumption. Never be afraid to ask for help.

Tip 9: Develop an Original Style

Ah, a real tough one this as developing your own style takes time and experimentation. By exploring lots of little different mediums and genres, you'll soon get to know what you like and how you like to do things. Over time, by doing things the way you want and in the subconscious way you approach a painting, a style will emerge that will be recognizable and more importantly, it will be your style.

Tip 10: Learn to Accept Failure as a Positive Thing.

Possibly one of the most important lessons an artist (or almost any professional) can learn. Not every picture you create will come out looking the way you wanted it too and the same goes with any experiment to try out. There is no such thing as a bad result... there are just results. Learning to take something positive out of everything you do will change the way you look at you next piece and how you approach it. If something doesn't work or you don't like it, don't do it again or use it as a bench mark to launch yourself from in your next piece.

5 Tips to becoming a better artist
Part 1

Becoming a good artist takes years of dedication, passion, energy and time. There are no short cuts but here are some tips to send you in the right direction.

Tip 1: Learn the Importance of the Sketch

Sketching is one of those things that every artist MUST do and do often. Sketches don't have to be perfect, nor do you have to show them to anyone. They can be as rough or as scratchy as you like but the thing to keep in mind is it's readability. The purpose of a sketch is to quickly illustrate or develop an idea you have, to capture or study some form of reference so that it can be worked on at a latter date. Because of this, the sketch only needs to convey the right information to you and you alone (unless you are drawing an idea out for a client then the message needs to be crystal clear).

Tip 2: Draw, Draw and Draw Some More!

This is a similar tip to the first but what I mean by this is draw anything that comes to mind or visually interests you. Sketch on the bus, train, in bed and even on the toilet. Seriously! The more you draw from your mind and from reference, the better you will become and the quicker your skills will develop. Take the time to doodle lots of different subjects and in lots of different environments as this will all help build up a mental cataloge of images to draw upon latter when you may become stuck for ideas or inspiration.

Tip 3: Build a Reference Library

This is a great tip that I learnt from years back. As you begin to fill sketch books with illustrations of ideas and reference material, you should build up that stack of books with more books. By this I mean buying art books, books on clothing, guns, tanks, other cultures, animals etc. The list of what you should look into is endless and should extend beyond your general interests. But it mustn't stop there. You should also collect images off of the internet and save them to your computer and organize them correctly. Take photos of things you see if you don't have time to sketch them. The purpose is to have a nice big collection of images that inspire you, inflame your imagination and, more specifically, if you need to draw something right, having the material there to draw from will add realism and clarity to your work.

Tip 4: Explore Different Mediums

This is when you take an idea from sketch to final painting. Exploring other methods of creating that end piece can really yield some unexpected results and challenge you to push yourself further into new situations. Playing with different types of paints such as oil, acrylic, water colour or gouache are the options most people would suggest trying, but there is more than experimenting with these. You could try air brushing, pastels, using charcoal or taking the leap into the digital realm. All these different mediums have their strengths that you can harness but you will never know them unless you try them out.

Tip 5: Learn Some Colour Theory (At Least)

This is a big one. Colour theory is a massive, massive subject and I can't do it justice here. What I would strongly suggest is investing time and money in a good colour theory book and learn from that. Even learning only a little bit, will help your work massivley. The more you push yourself to learn, the better and better you will become.

THE BIZARRE LITTLE WORLD

"The Octopus Man" 2008

Sunday the 1st of March 2009, will mark my first gallery exhibition showing to the public, ever. It is in the Basildon Library in Essex (England) and I will be displaying roughly 20 pieces of my work. This will include much of the Sick Sad Little World series, some new work not yet seen by human eyes (not even my own [not sure how that would work]) and some golden oldies like my Octopus Man Piece (shown here).

Also, on Saturday the 7th, Sunday the 8th and the following Saturday (the 14th), I will be doing some live paint sessions in the library and answering any questions about my work. So, as you can imagine, I have a lot of prep work to do before then. Lots of framing and glossing, ordering little cards and printing out name tags for the pieces etc. So I better get on and do them!

One Last Post Before Amsterdam

Just thought I'd post another image form the 10,000 Days project up before I head off to Amsterdam with my awesome girl friend Claire.

Rosetta Stoned

The 8th song on Tool's 10,000 Days, Rosetta Stoned, tells the story of an estranged loner who tells the tale of how he was abducted by aliens and told how the world will end. As the story progresses, the central protagonist reveals that he doesn't remember the message and as such, is considered insane.

Interestingly enough, one possible meaning behind the song is that the abduction never happened and the central figure did, in fact, have a 'trip' on DMT, a hallucinogenic drug known to cause alien abduction hallucinations. So, how you choose to look at it is down to you.

For my piece, I knew that I wanted to paint the alien. The orb that the creature is holding is what he shows to the loner where, inside, it reveals the secret of how the world ends. Of course, even if such a being could show a person how the world was to end, we as a race would never really understand what it was saying anyway. Its terms of reference would be, for better a word to describe it, alien and thus we wouldn't be able to gather any understanding to it.

Its a little like this: my two friends who play guitar often talk about pick ups and line outs and the such and as a drummer, these sorts of terms mean very little to me and so I don't understand what they are talking about. Now imagine that a creature from another world had something it wanted to show you. This is in fact another possible meaning to the song itself. The abduction happened, the man just didn't understand what the creature said.

The process to painting this image was first, it was sketched on paper and then inked over using a water resistant pen. Afterwards, the page was covered in a matte medium and left to dry. In the final phase, the piece was painted over using acrylic paints and then covered with a gloss. By applying the medium to the page, the paint was stopped from absorbing into the paper which meant that it sat on the surface. This in itself makes the paint more vibrant and bold and then, by applying the gloss, the colour just popped.

Digital Painting Help from a Hero

Late last year, I worked on a digital painting in my favoured art program, Artrage Painter 2. It started from a simple doodle with nothing in mind and soon started to develop into a picture of a strange creature in a hole.

Personally, I don't like creating images without anything in mind. I have to have at least a slight idea to go on. Even though the sketch gave me a flood of ideas at the beginning, it soon became apparent that I actually had no clue as to what I wanted out of the picture or how I wanted it to turn out at the end.

This approach of randomly attacking the canvas may work for some, but not me. I feel it is very important to know what works for you when creating art and what doesn't because then, you can either work round the things that stand in your way or you can attack them head on and turn them into one of your strengths.

Taking a step back from the image, I decided to gather some opinions from other artists over the web. My first approach was to place the image up for view on various art forums asking for critique. This in itself can be quite a daunting step to take, opening up your work for others to openly deconstruct and analyse and offer possible improvements. Daunting but nevertheless, quite a tried and test way of artistic improvement. The feedback I received was varied in the depth and quality but all was given in good nature but, unfortunately, a lot of it was contradictory. Some of the smaller comments like "Make the Halo stand out more" I took but again, it was hard for me to make a decision on what advice to take as I myself, didn't know how I wanted to guide my piece.

So, in the end, I contacted one of my artistic heroes', one of the greatest painters working today, Chet Zar (www.chetzar.com) and asked for his advice. To let you know, I have spoken to him and shown him my work before, in person and over the Internet, so this wasn't an isolated incident. His advice was great in depth and quality and I followed his words as best as I could, being ever mindful of all advice offered to me up to this point. In the end, the image at the top of this blog is what I came up with and I was actually really pleased with how it turned out.

I thanked everyone for their time and consideration and put up the final piece in the forums. A lot of people preferred it when the image was in its earlier stages but at the end of the day, you have to do it for yourself.

I guess the moral or lesson of the story it that you can't please everyone and in the end as long as your happy with the piece, that's all that should matter. It is very important to recognise the potential of placing work in art forums for others to see and it is never shameful asking for advice. The key is to take it all on board objectively and go with the gut. Chet Zar was also the guy who told me that attacking your weaknesses and turning them into strengths was a way to grow as an artist and I strongly agree with him.

In my up coming project based on the progressive metal band Tool's most recent album, 10,000 Days (which will be on show soon this year), I have decided to do just that and try and work on some instances that I know to be my weaknesses, which I'm not going to tell you what they are.

The First Setback of 2009

Aren't computers just big shits?

Well yes and no but I write this journal as a testament to a wasted evening trying to sort a blunder I made on my PC just a few days ago.Basically, I had accidentally deleted a very important driver that was for the sound card in a "2009 start of year clean up frenzy" (that is its official name) where I was removing lots of junk from the PC I didn't need.

The original plan for the evening was to spend it researching The Angel of Death, Psychopomps, The Necronomicon and The Collect for a piece in a series of paintings based on the Tool album 10,000 Days, whilst listening to some music, as well as gathering up lots of images of octopuses for another project. But No!

Because of my blunder I spent the evening trawling through forums looking for the link to a driver that would fix the problem. Several hours later...tears were beginning to form in my weary eyes as luck wasn't on my side. It would seem that my computer wasn't giving me the information I needed to find the appropriate driver and I had no idea how to get it. It looked hopeless...until I remembered my GoBack option (this was at about 2 in the morning!

Luckily when a friend built the computer for me nearly 4 years ago, he added the GoBack function as a last resort, in case I did something stupid like this. And thank Brian It worked!

The sound is back and working fine (phew) but there is a stern couple of lessons to learn here. Firstly, don't deleted things you obviously need. Obviously... Secondly, always make sure you have a backup plan like a restore point program to take your computer back a couple of days to undo any stupid errors. And finally, always be sure that the thing your deleting is what you want to delete.

Simple I know but if you want a stress free, waste free evening that was set aside for artistic research or endeavor, don't mess with your computer. It cost me an evening I really needed to use wisely.
